For those of us who didn’t grow up sharing a bedroom with a sibling, one of the more exciting parts of the transition to college is the thought of sharing a microscopic living space with a complete stranger. Surprisingly enough, however, your university is not going to sift through thousands of students to pair you with your perfect roommate and new best friend. When you finally realize that even your best friend can be a terrible roommate, there are still ways to cope.

June 1st is essentially opening day for the summer subletting season near college campuses, meaning the sidewalks are filled with uncomfortably sweaty fathers carrying boxes back and forth, and the aisles of Bed, Bath, & Beyond are littered with mothers carrying those strange 5-headed lamps that everyone buys. For me, move-in this summer took place in Saint Louis, where the cool 97-degree sun made carrying mattresses up three flights of stairs that much easier. Now, after having moved into three different apartments in my life, I’ve learned a few different ways to conserve energy for the multi-day college moving process

I-L-L-I-N-I! The University of Illinois based in lovely Champaign-Urbana is one of the top public institutions in the Midwest, as well as being one of the most social and exciting campuses in the country. I can personally guarantee the time you spend at U of I will be among the most satisfying and memorable years of your life…. or your money back! (from the University, not me). But before you load up your car with your duffel bags and lifetime supplies of Easy Mac and Cup O Noodles, there are a few things that you should know about life on the campus. if you are on the market for your first apartment, this most likely means your moving out of the dorms, so a congratulations is in order! Finally getting your own place with no RA’s around to snoop in on you is very exciting. However, it can be a little scary because along with freedom comes responsibility.
